Songs by Schubert and Klemmstein
In this extraordinary project, two musical worlds merge into a touching sound journey: the timeless songs by Franz Schubert and the modern, poetic works of the composer Eberhard Klemmstein. Renowned baritone Christian Hilz and pianist Dorian Keilhack give these works an interpretation of deep sensitivity and expressiveness, bringing the tonal colors of both eras to life. Eight selected Schubert songs are juxtaposed against seven songs by Klemmstein – a deliberate contrast that spans the thematic field of "moon" and "lament" across the ages. Eberhard Klemmstein emphasizes the folk song-like simplicity that also characterizes Schubert's songs in his compositions. He expands this simplicity with a virtuosic, modern musical language that brings the traditional art of song into the present. The settings of poems by Goethe, Hesse, and Rilke give these art songs a fresh, contemporary voice and explore existential dimensions such as longing and transience. The artists are united by their dedication to literature and the intimate form of the art. For Hilz, the art of song is both a matter of the heart and a 'mission' – an invitation to rediscover the connective power of music and poetry. With this project, Hilz, Keilhack, and Klemmstein create a musical space in which the timeless power of themes of longing, loss, and soul wandering can be felt in a very immediate way.
